Noyce Science Center

On July 28, Dwight Stoll (chemistry) and Colleen Jacks (biology) visited Grinnell College’s Noyce Science Center.  The construction involved two phases:  Phase 1 (accomplished in the late 90s) largely involved bringing the old ( 50s and 60s) building wings to code (modern air handling, etc.).  It was messy and many labs, offices, etc. were out of commission, and it really messed up their teaching and research.  Phase 2 saw the demolition of a wing that had been constructed as “temporary” space with the original building (mostly biology) and added more space with remodeling of additional spaces including the wing added in the late 80s.  Phase 2 also included significant replacement of mechanical to reduce noise problems from phase 1 and to make the building more energy efficient.  Prior to phase 1, the building consisted of approximately 100,000 sq feet (gross), and after completion of phase 2 the building was approximately 265,000 sq feet.
